The School of Education currently sponsors or co-sponsors numerous community-engaged research and service programs with direct impact on local, state and national communities. These activities directly serve children, families and communities and provide professional development for educators in PreK-12, higher education and agency settings.
The William & Mary Clinical Faculty Program is a Virginia Department of Education–funded initiative that strengthens mentorship capacity among highly effective teachers in our partner school divisions.
Project HOPE-Virginia is Virginia’s Program for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. William & Mary administers the program for the Virginia Department of Education.
The School-University Resource Network (SURN) specializes in professional development for Virginia’s K-12 teachers, instructional leaders, principals and central office leaders.
The goal of the Virginia Department of Education’s Training & Technical Assistance Center at William & Mary is to improve educational opportunities for school-age students with mild/moderate disabilities by providing services and assistance to educational professionals.
The TTT Virginia Center is administered by William & Mary for the Virginia Department of Education. The center’s goal is to help military service members who want to become teachers.
The CILD brings together researchers and practitioners to explore, prototype and test new learning designs with a particular focus on projects that explore deeper learning in K-16 schools and classrooms.
The Eastern Virginia Writing Project, located at William & Mary, is a local site of the National Writing Project. The EVWP offers teachers the expertise necessary to strengthen and evolve their own writing programs.
Recent data suggest that one-third of fourth graders still read below a basic level of proficiency. The W&M Literacy Lab is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to address these issues by providing tutoring, advocacy and educational opportunities for teachers.
The Center for Gifted Education (CFGE) is an internationally-known research and development center providing services to educators, policy makers, graduate students, researchers and parents in support of the needs of gifted and talented individuals. CFGE curriculum materials are used in all 50 states and approximately 30 countries.
The C.A.R.E. Lab addresses mental health disparities and promotes equitable access to high-quality behavioral, social-emotional and mental health services among youth, families and communities.
The Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic consists of the New Horizons Family Counselor Center and the New Leaf Clinic.
The THRIVE Research and Intervention Center exists to deepen our understanding of the factors that help individuals and communities recover from adverse circumstances and promote evidence-based tools that support thriving.
The Center for the Study of Education, Democracy & Justice brings together scholars from diverse academic communities to work collaboratively on concerns specific to the Commonwealth to inform law, policy-decision making and practice to create a more democratic, just and equal society.
The William & Mary School of Education is proud to be a part of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholar Program. Holmes Scholars are high-achieving students who are from traditionally under-represented backgrounds pursuing doctoral degrees in education.
Next Move @ W&M is a grant-funded, William & Mary-sponsored research project started in 2018 to support youth and young adults with developmental disabilities in our community. The mission of the program is to combat the estimated 70% unemployment rate for young adults with diverse needs in the Commonwealth.

The School of Education maintains the LRC to support its instructional programs. Among the various types of materials that may be borrowed from the LRC are K-12 textbooks and supplemental curriculum materials, psychoeducational test instruments, and audio-visual equipment.
