W&M’s Kathryn Lanouette leads collaborative research bridging science education and urban ecosystems

Assistant Professor Kathryn Lanouette is leading a research project that redefines what outdoor environmental education can look like in urban spaces and who gets access to it. Funded by a seed grant from the W&M School of Education, Lanuouette's initiative evolved as a partnership between the W&M Institute for Integrative Conservation, Richmond Public Schools and a local nonprofit.

New master’s program expands William & Mary’s reach and advances teacher leadership

The W&M School of Education has launched a new Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) in Curriculum & Instruction designed for practicing educators. Extending William & Mary’s academic footprint in the nation’s capital, the new degree was developed in collaboration with the W&M Washington Center and community partner KIPP DC (Knowledge is Power Program).

Inspired by her graduate study abroad experience, which allowed her to explore higher education in a more immersive and globally informed manner, Clinical Assistant Professor of Higher Education Chelsea Smith redesigned the “EDUC 500 Global Studies” course to include a cultural and higher education experience in Ireland during the spring of 2025.

With both a Master of Education and doctoral degree in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership from William & Mary, Daria Lorio-Barsten joins the School of Education as a clinical assistant professor in Curriculum & Instruction. Her research focuses on behavior analysis in school settings, deeper learning, leadership, building inclusive learning communities, systems change and effective teacher preparation and support.

The School of Education celebrated its 2025 graduates during Commencement weekend May 16-17. Thirty-five doctoral students were celebrated in a Doctoral Cording Ceremony on Friday. In all, 278 students graduated from undergraduate and graduate programs in education.

In November 2024, Patricia Popp Ph.D. ’01 was honored with the Sandra Neese Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) in recognition of her unwavering support for students experiencing homelessness. Her efforts as the state coordinator for Project HOPE-Virginia, a role she assumed in 2003, have profoundly impacted the lives of countless children and families across the Commonwealth.
