Ray Mitic joins W&M Higher Education faculty
This fall, the School of Education welcomes new faculty members. Today, we introduce Ray Mitic, who is joining our Higher Education faculty.
Tell us a little about your background and what brought you to W&M.
I’m a first-generation college student and child of immigrants who found my college experience as the reason I became a teacher and researcher. After spending three wonderful years at the University of North Dakota, I come to William & Mary to continue my teaching and research at a historic institution that places high importance on teaching and scholarship. Originally from Chicago and spending time in New York City and Washington, D.C., I look forward to being back on the East Coast. I was also drawn by the history, liberal arts focus and global orientation of William & Mary.
What’s your area of research and what question are you most passionate about answering right now?
My research centers on the societal and individual impact of higher education, particularly on the equitable outcomes of higher education at the local, national and international levels. Current projects include the impact of liberal arts education on civic and democratic outcomes, promoting equity within the space science ecosystem, the intersection of racial climate and mental health in doctoral education, and first-generation college student success. Right now, I’m most passionate about what parts of the college experience help create a pluralistic and truly democratic society.
What else are you hoping to get involved with on campus or in the community?
I’m hoping to get involved with two communities at William & Mary in particular: the international scholarly community as well as student athletes.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I’m a husband to Annika and a cat dad to Ella. I’m an avid Star Trek fan (hence my interest in racial equity in space sciences).
