W&M Hosts Dedication of Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic
In a heartwarming ceremony that brought together students, faculty, alumni and the community, William & Mary's School of Education celebrated the dedication of the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic on April 24. The event marked a significant milestone in the School of Education’s mission to address the growing demand for mental health services.
The Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic, made possible by a generous $2 million gift in 2020 from Professor Emeritus S. Stuart Flanagan and his wife, Cammie, has evolved into a comprehensive hub for mental health services, as well as a training facility for William & Mary counseling students. The Flanagan’s transformative gift expanded the clinic's capabilities, encompassing the New Horizons Family Counseling Center, the New Leaf Clinic, and a telehealth team that formed to address the need for remote support during the pandemic. Integrating these services under the Flanagan Counselor Education Center facilitated a more seamless transition to telehealth, enabling the clinic to reach out to the community and provide vital mental health assistance.
The dedication ceremony in April was a moving occasion, attended by the Flanagans and Dean Knoeppel, who jointly cut the ribbon with Clinic Director Erin Woods to officially mark the clinic's dedication. Casey Roberts, Executive Director of the New Horizons Regional Education Centers, and Flanagan Scholarship recipient Allison Dukes, M.Ed. '20, Ph.D. '23, delivered heartfelt remarks, highlighting the invaluable contribution of the clinic to the W&M community and beyond.
Dr. S. Stuart Flanagan, known for his decades of teaching mathematics and mathematics education-related courses at W&M, shared his perspective during the ceremony, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to support mental health training and counseling services.
The dedication ceremony concluded with a reception where attendees had the opportunity to thank the Flanagan family for their unwavering support. The event was a testament to the power of philanthropy and collaboration in addressing the critical need for mental health services and ensuring accessibility to all in need.
As the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic continues to grow and evolve, it promises to be a source of hope and support for individuals seeking mental health services and a cornerstone of counselor education at William & Mary.
