Charles Gressard
Chancellor Professor of Counselor Education
Rick Gressard arrived at William & Mary in 1993 with the establishment of the addictions counseling program, one of the first of its kind in Virginia. He brought significant experience in counselor education and behavioral health, having taught at both the University of Virginia and the UVA School of Medicine. In 2009, he co-founded the New Leaf Clinic to bring addictions counseling services to W&M students and provide critical training for master’s and doctoral counseling interns.
Rick’s leadership in the counseling profession includes serving as the chair of the Virginia Board of Counseling, chair of the National Board of Certified Counselors, vice-chair of CACREP, and interim president/CEO of CACREP. Additionally, he has had the opportunity to work in 26 different countries, including teaching ethics in St. Lucia and Romania.

The New Leaf Clinic Fund supports substance abuse counseling services for W&M students and the wider community. Rick Gressard co-founded the clinic in 2009 to provide critical training for master’s and doctoral interns and combat the impact of substance abuse in our communities.
