Doctoral Student Handbook

The School of Education awards two doctoral degrees: the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The goal of the Ed.D. programs is to prepare scholar-practitioners with the commitment and competence necessary to create and enhance educational policy and practice in a variety of settings, ranging from the individual classroom to administrative offices and government agencies. The goal of the Ph.D. programs is to develop scholars to conduct and interpret original research and to communicate the results of that research to multiple constituencies that are concerned with education. The Ed.D. programs prepare educational leaders who work in K-12 and higher education, government, and nonprofit organizations. The Ph.D. programs prepare scholars for service as college and university professors, researchers, and educational leaders.
