M.A.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction – Elementary Education

The program provides a strong foundation in elementary education through coursework that integrates educational theory, research-based pedagogy and authentic classroom practice. Students develop expertise in mathematics and literacy instruction, using curriculum standards and assessment data to design engaging lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners. A culminating student teaching seminar supports candidates as they reflect on field experiences, connect theory to practice and build the confidence and professional skills needed for successful teaching careers.

Clinical experiences begin early and continue throughout the program. Students work in a variety of school settings, gaining hands-on experience with diverse student populations and instructional approaches. During the fall semester, candidates complete at least 60 hours of fieldwork before progressing to a 15-week full-time student teaching placement in the spring. Summer school visits provide additional opportunities to observe and engage with diverse learning environments before the academic year begins.

Graduates of the Elementary Education M.A.Ed. program are eligible to apply for Virginia licensure in Elementary Education (PK–6).

All candidates must pass the professional assessments required by the Virginia Board of Education. At William & Mary, these licensure assessments are also graduation requirements and must be completed regardless of whether a candidate chooses to apply for a teaching license. Additional Requirements

Candidates seeking PK–6 endorsement must complete six semester hours in each of the following areas:

• English
• Mathematics
• Science (courses must come from two different lab science disciplines: Earth science, biology, chemistry or physics)
• History and Social Sciences (such as history, geography, civics/government or economics)

Students should consult with their advisor to ensure that planned coursework meets these requirements.

All of the students in our recent cohorts were offered full-time teaching positions in elementary education upon graduation. Our students have gone on to work as licensed elementary teachers in both public and private schools.

Application materials include your unofficial transcript(s), personal statements, a resume/CV, and two recommendations. We encourage prospective students to begin an application, as the portal provides a clear overview of all application requirements, including the personal statement prompt.

Students may apply for federal financial aid by completing the FAFSA. If you have questions about your financial aid package, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@wm.edu.

All applicants are automatically considered for available scholarships, and recipients will be notified directly if selected for an award.

Because of the program’s required fieldwork, assistantships are not typically available for students in the Elementary Education program.
