Writing

WritingThe best advice for supporting your child’s writing at home is to encourage them to write daily and to write for a variety of purposes. For young children (preschool through elementary), a great deal of growth in writing comes from writing about interesting people and writing with others.

  • Encourage your young child to keep a daily journal recording interesting things they learned that day. For example, they could write about a story they read or write down the activities they engaged in that day.
  • Encourage your child to write like a scientist by recording and observing the outside world around them.
  • Encourage your child to write down simple recipes and make lists for the grocery store, or to-do lists for their day.
  • Encourage your child to write emails or letters to friends or family.
