Our Curriculum
Built on the foundation of a liberal arts education
William & Mary’s School of Education provides a strong curriculum for teacher education certification programs. Consistent with the College’s focus on a liberal arts education, programs in the School of Education include balanced attention to studies in general education, professional education, and the content discipline of one or more teaching specialties. All teacher candidates major in an arts and science discipline.
National Board certified faculty
Our core faculty in math and reading education are National Board certified, so they not only know what it takes to be master teachers, but they’re preparing tomorrow’s educational leaders.
Success on the Praxis
Praxis tests are taken by individuals entering the teaching profession as part of the certification process required by the Virginia State Board of Education. Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests measure basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition to licensure, passing scores on this test are required for entry into student teaching. Praxis II tests measure subject-specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills needed for beginning teaching. Praxis II is required for program completion and Virginia licensure (except Latin and Special Education).
Among graduates of all Virginia colleges and universities, graduates of William & Mary's teacher education programs consistently maintain the highest scores on all sections of the Praxis series.
