Marguerita K. DeSander J.D., Ph.D. '05
Marguerita K. DeSander J.D., PhD (2005), currently an assistant professor for the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies program at The Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the George Washington University, was recently appointed as the Department Chair for the Educational Administration, Leadership and Research Department at the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Dr. DeSander will begin in this new role July 1, 2014.
Dr. DeSander was the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, Lincoln County Schools, NC (2008-2011) and the Executive Director of Human Resources (1999-2003) Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools in Virginia. Prior to enrolling in the EPPL K-12 PhD program, she was a practicing attorney for five years in the metropolitan Detroit area focusing on employment issues.
Dr. Marguerita DeSander earned her Ph.D. in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership from the College of William and Mary and her J.D. from The Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Dr. DeSander's research interests include educational law, personnel administration in education, educational policy and reform initiatives. A former practicing attorney who specializes in employment-related legal matters, she has presented and published on the topics of teacher evaluation and merit pay, tenure teacher dismissal for incompetence, and the incongruence of federal legislation regarding public education. Dr. DeSander served on the Board of Directors for the Consortium for Educational Assessment and Teaching Effectiveness for 10 years, serving as the president of the organization for the 2011-12 year.
