Join us March 9, 2020 as we LAUNCH the SURN Family Engagement Academy. Unlike any current family engagement offerings, we will provide your school or division team with a fifteen-month ongoing, action-oriented professional learning experience.

Family and community engagement experts, Karen Mapp and Steve Constantino share the stage for the first time ever at the initial convening.

Dr. Karen L. Mapp is a senior lecturer on education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and the faculty director of the Education Policy and Management Master's Program. Over the past twenty years, Mapp's research and practice focus has been on the cultivation of partnerships among families, community members and educators that support student achievement and school improvement. She joined HGSE in January of 2005 after serving for eighteen months as the Deputy Superintendent for Family and Community Engagement for the Boston Public Schools (BPS). While working with the BPS, she continued to fulfill her duties as president of the Institute for Responsive Education (IRE). Mapp is the author and co-author of several articles and books about the role of families and community members in the work of student achievement and school improvement including "Partners in Education: A Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships" (2014), "From Private Citizens to Public Actors: The Development of Parent Leaders through Community Organizing" (2015) and "Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher's Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success" (2017). 

Steven Constantino

Leader, teacher, speaker and best-selling author Dr. Steve Constantino has a long and distinguished career in leadership and bringing innovation to educational and business organizations. Steve began his career as a teacher and moved through the ranks to award-winning principal and school district superintendent. At the State level, Steve served first as Chief Academic Officer and was then appointed to Acting State Superintendent by former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. Today, Steve continues to accept numerous invitations to speak and consult with schools, districts and business organizations around the world, is a Senior Vice President with LivingTree Technologies and is also an Executive Associate Professor in educational leadership at William & Mary School of Education, as well as an adjunct lecturer at the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia, where he teaches a course in family and community engagement. As a result of his experiences and his practical approach to engaging families, Steve has authored four books on the subject: Making Your School Family Friendly (NASSP, 2002), Engaging Every Family (Rowman and Littlefield, 2003), 101 Ways to Create Real Family Engagement (Engage Press, 2008) and Engage Every Family: Five Simple Principles (Corwin Press).

  • Four, day-long related and interactive workshops during the 2020-2021 school year where teams will spend significant time with the experts as they build their school and/or division engagement plans under the leadership of family engagement thought leader Steve Constantino;
  • Personalized coaching throughout the course of the Academy; and
  • Culminating free share fair event to share and celebrate with other academy fellows.
