Global Studies in Ireland: May 20 – June 3, 2018
Rich in history and tradition
Ireland provides a site of educational transformation within the European Union and has a long tradition of commitment to education. The Celtic Tiger ushered in an era of prosperity little evidenced in the country, but the economic downturn resulted in the Irish government strategizing about how to best leverage their educational resources. Coupled with these in-country changes are the impacts of the Bologna Report and Lisbon Strategy, as well as the recent vote on Brexit.
Learning outcomes and modules help create a system of transparency for student mobility in Europe. The U.S. is beginning to look at similar options.
The course content creates a comparative analysis of the Irish education system relative to the United States. Visits to schools and colleges in both Ireland and Northern Ireland provide the basis of comparisons. As well, we will meet with leaders of the Higher Education Authority to discuss their recently released Strategy for Higher Education report. Students will read both fiction and non-fiction texts to learn more about the history of the Irish educational system, reform efforts, and the political climate. Assignments are reflective in nature with a culminating critical project that addresses the implications of international education on U.S. curriculum and educational goals.
The trip will be led by Pamela Eddy, professor of higher education and chair of the Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership Department. Dr. Eddy was a Fulbright Scholar in Dublin, Ireland in 2009 and continues her research on partnerships there.
Who is eligible?
Current students and alumni of School of Education programs are eligible to participate.
1 credit and 3 credit options:
- Pre-trip meeting and readings
- In-country visits—research and journaling
- Post-class paper/assignment
The package includes:
- 13 nights accommodations (based on double occupancy);
- 4 evening meals;
- Breakfasts daily;
- Dublin Theatre tickets;
- ALL cultural activities;
- Guided coach transportation throughout trip;
- Guided programs in Belfast, Dublin, and Derry;
- Entrance fees into all sites and activities, meetings, and lectures.
Estimated Costs
- Program Fee: $3,735 (includes R/B). This cost is based on an enrollment of 8 students, but will decrease if more students enroll. With a full enrollment of 15 students, the cost per student would be $3,075.

- In-State: 1 credit = $ 535; 3 credits= $1,605
- Out of State: 1 credit= $985; 3 credits = $2,955

There is a course limit of 15 and this will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. A nonrefundable application fee of $75 is due at the time of application and will be applied to the program fee. A $500 deposit will be due by February 1, 2018.
