Ricardo Phipps joins W&M Counseling faculty
This fall, the School of Education welcomes new faculty members. Today, we introduce Ricardo Phipps, who is joining our Counseling faculty.
Tell us a little about your background and what brought you to William & Mary.
I am a second career counselor educator and have a great passion for teaching. In recent years I have held some administrative roles at other institutions, but I am excited to return to more student-facing service. Counselor Education at William & Mary has such a strong social justice focus, which resonates with my values as counselor and counselor educator. I was also drawn to W&M because of the blending of the on-campus and online counseling program opportunities. This is a strong show of institutional commitment to growing the counseling profession in this area of the country and beyond.
What’s your area of research and what question are you most passionate about answering right now? I am very interested in multicultural aspects of counseling, with three main focus areas—immigration trauma, the integration of spirituality in counseling, and Black male engagement in counseling and stigma. One of the questions I am most passionate about now involves an exploration of the attitudes of Black male undergraduate students about counseling as a career option.
What else are you hoping to get involved with on campus or in the community?
I have enjoyed participation and leadership in state professional counselor organizations in the past. I understand that the Hampton Roads division of the Virginia Counseling Association is very active. So I look forward to building some connections there. Overall, I am eager to meet W&M community members across campus.
