Brent Henderson joins W&M Counseling faculty
This fall, the School of Education welcomes new faculty members. Today, we introduce Brent Henderson, who is joining our Counseling faculty.
Tell us a little about your background and what brought you to W&M.
I spent 32 years working in K-12 education as both a teacher and school counselor. As a teacher, I taught students with special needs at the elementary level. My tenure as a school counselor was spent working with high school students. Additionally, I served as coordinator of school counseling for five years in the largest school district in Georgia. I had opportunities to collaborate with school counselors, teachers, administrators and stakeholders as well as local and national elected officials. Through these experiences, I learned that I had much to offer the next generation of counselors and school counselors. William & Mary provides an atmosphere to support those students on their journeys.
What’s your area of research and what question are you most passionate about answering right now?
My research interests are experiences of LGBTQ+ students in K-12 settings, principals’ perspectives on school counseling, and school counselors' work with special education students. Currently, I am especially passionate about knowing how our LGBTQ+ students are being impacted by the current atmosphere in many states with "don't say gay" legislation.
Anything else you’d like to share?
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, bird watching and gardening.
