Angelo Letizia Ph.D. '14
Angelo Letizia Ph.D. '14 is an Associate Professor of Education and Department Chair of Initial Programs at Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU). Since graduating William and Mary in 2014 with his doctorate in Higher Education, Letizia has held two faculty positions. From 2015 to 2018, Letizia was an assistant professor at Newman University (NU) in Wichita, Kansas, where he taught master’s classes in education research, history, and cultural diversity. While at NU, Letizia was involved with the Newman Studies Program, a joint endeavor between faculty members in different departments. In 2017, he was awarded the Milton Research Award Grant by NU and in 2018, he joined the faculty at NDMU.
Letizia primarily teaches in the doctoral and master’s program, focusing on classes in educational philosophy and history, law, leadership, social studies methods and historical research. He also serves as Chair in various dissertations and supervises teaching interns. In 2022, Letizia became the Department Chair of initial programs in the NDMU School of Education. In this role, he helps oversee all pre-service teachers and programs. In 2023, Letizia was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure.
Beyond this, Letizia has published five scholarly monographs/books (one of which was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education) with both commercial and university presses on various topics ranging from citizenship education to leadership and arts-based research. In addition, he has authored and co-authored over two dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and other essays and published five books of poetry.
Letizia has found that his findings in the Higher Education program at William & Mary, including theories and ideas related to leadership, organizational governance, and student development, directly helped him in his present positions. "I am a better faculty member and leader because of the things I have learned. The things I learned at William & Mary are an example of praxis, of the mutual interplay between theory and practice and gradual improvement of society," says Letizia.
Letizia mentions that his greatest experience at William & Mary is tradition. "Knowing that I attended a university that Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, actors, and many other luminaries have attended, over the course of four centuries, means so much to me." Letizia continues, "I am in the company of some of the best minds this continent has produced."
