October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

 In recognition of Dyslexia Awareness Month, the Virginia Department of Education is offering
two informational webinars designed for Virginia teachers, administrators, and parents.
Presenters are experts in the fields of dyslexia and reading. To accommodate the schedules of
participants, these live webinars will be evening sessions. Webinar information and links to

Recent Research on the Language Basis of Dyslexia: Assessment and Intervention
Implications
Date and time: October 12, 2022, 6:30–8 p.m.

This session will review research on the language basis of dyslexia through
developmental and historical lenses. Dyslexia and its commonly co-occurring
learning differences will be described with a focus on early identification and
intervention within the context of current legislation and advocacy.

Presenter: Tiffany P. Hogan, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders at MGH Institute of Health Professions in
Boston, Massachusetts; Director of the Speech and Language (SAiL) Literacy Lab;
and Research Associate at Harvard University.

Families and Schools Partnering for Children’s Literacy Success
Date and time: October 26, 2022, 7–8 p.m.

This session will provide information to help families and schools work together to
support children’s literacy success in and out of school. Participants will learn
a) tips for starting or enhancing discussions about literacy instruction and
intervention, b) ways to increase joint understanding of evidence-based literacy
practices, and c) strategies for addressing concerns about children’s literacy
development together. Free evidence-based resources to support family-school
literacy partnerships from the National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL) will be
overviewed.

Presenter: Dr. Sarah Sayko is a Senior Research Associate at Research Making
Change (RMC) Research Corporation in Arlington, Virginia. She is also the Deputy
Director and leads the Parent and Family Strand of NCIL.
