SURN Services

The School-University Resource Network (SURN) contracts with individual school divisions to provide customized professional learning in response to the division's assessed needs. The foundation of SURN Services is a collaborative partnership between division educators and SURN staff with the shared goals of improving learning, teaching, and leading and enhancing transfer of professional learning into practice.

SURN's contract services include:

  • School or division-based professional learning
  • Instructional and leadership coaching
  • Facilitated communities of practice
  • Consulting
  • Collaborative grant writing

In recent years, SURN has designed and facilitated professional learning sessions in Virginia school divisions on the following topics: curriculum, instruction, and assessment, teaching multilingual learners, instructional coaching, aligned and effective lesson planning, grouping, formative assessment, engaging instructional strategies, and sound practices for secondary English instruction.

Over the past five years, SURN has also developed and implemented an instructional coaching model aimed at improving learning and teaching and promoting teacher optimism and agency. SURN has also led communities of practice for educational leaders interested in honing their coaching skills and dispositions.

SURN welcomes opportunities to collaborate with our school partners to provide meaningful, engaging, and transferrable professional learning directly in schools and divisions.
