the process
- First think about what you know already about genres. Do you have any other questions you want to know other than the questions listed in the introduction? Answer questions 1 & 2 on the resources guide about what you know already about genres.
- Next, explore the resources on the web about genres. Create a section in your notebook or binder called "Genres". Jot down notes and the resources that are the most helpful in your notebook. Do any of the resources help answer your questions? Answer questions 3 & 4 on the resources guide.
- Then, begin thinking about the different ways to use children's literature in your classroom: read-alouds, minilessons, and literature circles. What are your questions? What else do you want to know? Are your questions different from the ones contained in the introduction? Answer questions 5 & 6 on the resources guide.
- Go through the resources on instructional techniques. Create a section in your binder called "Instructional Techniques." Jot down any notes and resources in the section of your binder. Answer questions 7 & 8 on the resources guide.
- Analyze and Reflect about your findings and your teaching (or future teaching) practices. What do you see yourself using in terms of genres or instructional techniques? Create a genre study incorporating what you have learned. While you do not need to flush out every individual lesson within the study, create an outline of lessons including topics covered, objectives, and books that you would use. Make sure you identify what instructional techniques you plan to use (read alouds, minilessons, literature circles books, ect). Your outline should include at least 6 lessons. Choose two of these lessons to flush out into formal lesson plans. Refer to the evaluation section of the webquest for further guidelines and a rubric.
- Share your genre study with a colleague/peer. For more on this, read the evaluation section.
