Professor Janet D. Parker receives Fulbright Award
The Fulbright Award is designed to provide the opportunity for educators to work together as a team on issues of mutual interest to their communities, schools and students and to increase international understanding between Argentine and American educators. Her exchange partner, Viviana Allegri, principal of an elementary school in Argentina, was in Williamsburg for three weeks in October. Together they established a blog for student communication between WJC Public School James River Elementary School whose students are learning Spanish and Argentine students learning English.
Elizabeth Bailey '08 M.A. Ed, Catherine Schwenkler, '08 M.A. Ed and Whitney Slough'08 B.A. of the Curriculum & Instruction Foreign Language program, presented at the October 10, 2009 conference of the Foreign Language of Association of Virginia, FLAVA. They presented How to Engage Students through Authentic Extended Performance Tasks in Spanish and Latin classrooms.
Megan Packett Cory,'07, presented a session with foreign language adjunct faculty member, Janet Parker, at NECTFL (Northeast Conference on Teaching Foreign Languages) in NYC, April 2009, Embracing Technology to Engage Students in Authentic Language Learning Experiences. They were finalists in the best of NECTFL. They will present the same topic as a pre-conference workshop in March 2010.
Beth Block '08 B.A, Kenneth Bumbaco,'08 M.A. Ed and Carl John Kamp'08 B.A. published "Operation Restore Pompeii" in How to Assess Authentic Learning by Kay Burke released in September 2009. The publication was an extended performance task created in a course taught by Janet D. Parker.
