Jill Sivertsen Hunter '71
Chair of the School of Education Development Board
Since 1988, Jill has been Head of the Lower School at Collegiate School in Richmond. Collegiate is an independent K-12 school with 1585 students. Recently Jill Hunter traded places with one of the third grade teachers for a week. "She was me and I was her! She was getting a masters degree in administration and this was part of her internship! It really got me back into the mindset of what my teachers did all day long."
Her main areas of interest are leadership and curriculum development. She oftten presents workshops on these topics. Jill also coordinates a volunteer reading program called Chat and Chew. P articipants take books to discuss during lunch at a school with special needs. "I have loved working with faculty to create a new campus that has provided unlimited possibilities for curriculum expansion! Also, working with children keeps you young at heart!" "I coached cub basketball for seven years, and I love wearing a totally different hat at Collegiate. Seeing these young women again is a treat. I have also been running a long time and love doing 10 K races."
After receiving her B.A. in Elementary Education from the College of William and Mary in 1971, Jill taught elementary school and was also a reading specialist in Chesterfield County. Jill received her masters degree in Reading from Virginia Commonwealth University. For 10 years she taught at the University of Richmond in the Education Department and coordinated a summer course, Search for Delicious, that helped teachers see how to use good literature to teach writing. Jill also ran an undergraduate Woman's Studies program and served as interim dean of Westhampton College at UR.
Jill is active in St. Michaels Episcopal Church where she has served on the vestry and coordinated adult education. She has made three mission trips through the church.
Jill is married to Tim Hunter (B.A., Government, 1970), who owns The Hunter Agency where he works with investments and insurance. She and Tim have two sons, Matt and Warren and an infant granddaughter, Alice.
