What kind of educational and professional experiences did you have prior to beginning this degree?
Prior to starting the M.A.Ed. program at the William & Mary School of Education, I worked as a building substitute in the Northampton Area School District in Northampton, Pennsylvania. Before working at the elementary level, I mentored secondary students grades 9-12 as part of Franklin and Marshall Colleges Philosophy at McCaskey Program; an outreach program that prepares secondary students for the National Ethics High School Bowl.

Why did you choose this field, and what motivates you in this work?
I chose education after working in the classroom with students as a substitute. It is very motivating to see your students grow right in front of you and to know that you get to be a part of that process. As a first grade teacher now, creating my own classroom environment to ensure student success is what motivates me to help my students find their passions and meet their goals.

What do you hope to be doing after graduation? In 10 or 15 years?
In 10 years, I hope to still be in the classroom and starting my family. In 15 years, I hope to be pursuing my Ph.D. in Education and helping to lead the next generation of teachers.

Why did you choose William & Mary and specifically your degree program? What sets this degree program apart from those offered at other colleges?
I chose William & Mary for its long-standing reputation of academic rigor and success. The School of Education is world renowned, and I knew I wanted to be taught by educators with extensive classroom experience and those active in the educational research community. I also was drawn to this program because can be completed in three semesters. I think the timeline of the program, coupled with its amazing faculty make it a top-tier teacher preparation program.

What has been the most influential experience you've had so far in your program?
My most influential experience was when I was asked by my cooperating school division to take on a full-time position in the middle of the fall semester. All of my professors supported me in every way possible to make sure that I was prepared to begin a new role while also taking classes full time. Working in education takes a team effort, and the faculty and staff in the M.A.Ed. program are a great team to work with.
