What kind of educational and professional experiences did you have prior to beginning this degree?
In high school, I participated in the Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow program, which introduced me to my love for elementary education. Throughout my time in undergrad, I worked as a substitute teacher in Newport News Public Schools, which gave me practical experience in the classroom. On campus, I worked as a Resident Assistant and a Peer Mentor for incoming students which allowed me to grow my confidence in public speaking, mentorship and communication—all necessary for a career in education.
Why did you choose this field, and what motivates you in this work?
I grew up in a family of educators, as so many educators do. My family instilled a value for education and learning in me from a very young age, as well as a serious reading addiction. I love working with children, watching them grow confident in their skills and talents. I am motivated by their growth and perseverance to keep trying, even when the work is hard, and always rewarded when they finally master a topic.
What do you hope to be doing after graduation? In 10 or 15 years?
I hope to be in my own classroom! I plan to stay in the classroom throughout my career because, for me, there is nothing else that I could be happier doing!
What has been the most influential experience you've had so far in your program?
Field experience has changed my entire perspective on education and teaching, and it has made me fall in love with every aspect of teaching. It is an irreplaceable experience, and working with cooperating teachers, university professors and supervisors has been monumental in my development as a future teacher.
