Graduate Assistantships

Applying for Graduate Assistantships

  • Current applicants for admission will mark the box indicating an interest in holding a graduate assistantship on the online application.
  • Currently enrolled students will be prompted to complete the online form in December/January to apply for positions in the next academic year. (Current applicants should not complete this form.)

Notification of Graduate Assistantship Offers

  • Newly admitted students will often receive an email notification of an assistantship award shortly after being admitted.  Sometimes, however, awards go out a few weeks after admission.
  • Currently enrolled students will be notified of assistantship award in late May/early June for the upcoming academic year.

Assistantships are only open to students enrolled in full-time programs. Through these appointments students have the opportunity to assist faculty and administrators in meeting their teaching, research and administrative obligations. In return, students receive tuition assistance and a stipend or salary. The total remunerative value of an assistantship is a “package” including both tuition support and a stipend or salary, as well as an out-of-state tuition waiver, if applicable.

Assistantships are sometimes available in other offices on the William & Mary campus as well as in other educational agencies in the community. The exact dollar value varies each year and is determined by the individual agencies. Higher Education master’s level students will be invited to interview for assistantships in the Division of Student Affairs.
