William & Mary, M.A.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction - Secondary Education, English

Describe your career and how the William & Mary School of Education helped prepare you.
I am currently in my fifth year as an English teacher at Chantilly High School, which is part of Fairfax County Public Schools. I am also the yearbook adviser at my school. I credit much of my development as a teacher to the William & Mary School of Education because of my professors, peers, and student teaching experience. My professors were knowledgeable, kind and passionate. They focused on real-world applications of content so that we were prepared for the classroom. My cohort became a wonderful support group that provided advice, camaraderie, and friendship. My student teaching experience allowed me to experiment and work out the jitters of novice teaching. I was simultaneously supported and challenged in the best way possible.

Why did you choose to apply to William & Mary and specifically to your program?

Since third grade, I had set my sights on William & Mary as a part of my future. Thankfully, I was accepted and began my undergraduate career in the fall of 2014. I also knew that I was going to become an English teacher, so continuing my time in Williamsburg with the fifth-year program made sense financially. Rather than spend an extra year earning my M.A.Ed., I could start taking Master's classes during my senior year of undergrad and start teaching a year ahead of schedule. I also heard from recruiters and teachers that employers love William & Mary teachers. They were right. During my job search process, the education section on my resume definitely drew attention.

What has been the most influential experience as an alum?

Dr. Lindy Johnson, one of my former professors, asks me to speak to her students every year. I love meeting fledgling teachers. I love giving advice and answering questions about teaching because I want to spread my passion about education to others. Being able to meet new generations of teachers is inspiring and refreshing.

Any additional information you think a prospective student should know about the School of Education and our degree programs?

I have no way to compare William & Mary's program with other programs, but I can definitely say that I never regretted choosing W&M. The building is beautiful, the community is welcoming, and you will definitely be more prepared for your role in education.
