2007, William & Mary, Ph.D. with Honors - Educational Policy, Planning & Leadership - Curriculum & Educational Leadership

What is your current job?
Professor of Elementary Education at The University of North Carolina, Wilmington

What are your research interests?
My research focuses on identifying quality teaching practices that enhance teachers’ and students’ global competence, particularly as they relate to global ethical issues. I am also interested in how human-centered design can cultivate teacher agency.

Why did you choose W&M?
I visited William & Mary as a high school student when my brother attended the university in the mid-90s. I loved the beautiful, green campus and being surrounded by history. I thought then that I would love to return as a student myself (and I did)!

What is your favorite thing about the program?
I appreciated most the program’s small class sizes, allowing us to engage meaningfully with our peers and faculty, as well as the opportunity to learn from diverse researchers, school leaders and teachers.

How has attending W&M impacted your career to date?
As a graduate assistant, I worked at the Center for Gifted Education designing and field-testing inquiry-based science units, conducting pre- and post-assessments, and attending and presenting at state and national conferences. This experience shaped my career path, leading me to design and pilot my own curriculum units for organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and informed my current work as a teacher educator, researcher, and education consultant at the World Bank Group.
