New Positions

Nathan F. Alleman (PhD ‘08) joined the W&M faculty for the academic year as Visiting Assistant Professor, taking Dr. Foubert’s classes during the fall term while he is on family leave and Dr. Eddy’s classes in the spring term while she is in Ireland. Nathan has been selected to attend the ASHE/CEHAP Early Career Faculty Workshop at the Jacksonville meeting in November.

Marilyn Barr was recently appointed Superintendent of Richmond County Public Schools

Stacia Barreau, EPPL Special Ed 2008, is the new Principal at Aberdeen Elementary School in Hampton.

Valerie T. Brown (MEd ’08) has been named the Interim Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs at the College of William & Mary.

Kia Butts (MEd ’08) is now an Assistant Dean of Admission at the College of William & Mary.

Karen Cagle has been named Assistant Principal of Yorktown Middle School.

Whitney Cataldo is the Assistant Principal of Poquoson High School in Poquoson.

Melanie Cecere is the Assistant Principal of Poquoson Middle School in Poquoson.

Ralph Charlton: $5,000 dissertation research grant from NCAA.

Beth (Hodges) Clarke, M.Ed. Higher Education, December 2005, was recently promoted to Director of Development at Virginia Wesleyan College (her undergraduate alma mater) in Norfolk, VA. Previously, she served as the Director of Alumni Relations.

Debra Daily, a current student in K-12 administration, has accepted a new position at the Behavior Specialist for the Early Childhood Programwith the WJCC schools.

Joy Davis, an EPPL-Gifted graduate from December, 2007, has been appointed to a director post in the Center for Excellence at Virginia Union University in Richmond.

Barbara L. Driver (Ph.D., Special Education '00) Director of Exceptional Education and Support Services for Henrico County, was a co-presenter at the Discipline of Students with Special Needs in Virginia conference in Richmond, Virginia in October.

Mary Fletcher (M.Ed., ’06) began working at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (Technical University of Munich or TUM) in May as a Program Coordinator for an international Master of Science (M.Sc) program in earth space science and technology. She works with students from around the world and has been enjoying the experience of comparing university administration in Europe to that of the United States.

Antonia Fox is the new Principal at York High School inYorktown.

Sammy Fudge is the new Principal at D. J. Montague Elementary School in Williamsburg.

Daina Paupe Henry (EdD ’01) was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association for Institutional Research-an international, multi-million dollar non-profit organization serving the needs of higher education institutional research professionals.

Lisa L. Heuvel (current PhD student) was recently promoted to Associate Producer in Colonial Williamsburg's Education Outreach Department. She oversees Web educational resources for CW's award-winning Electronic Field Trips programs (http://www.history.org/history/teaching/eft/) designed for upper elementary and middle school students nationwide. This year, two programs and their Web sites were recognized with regional Emmies.

Christine Hill is the new Principal at R. O. Nelson Elementary School in Newport News.

Lynnell Gibson: Dissertation Award from the National Association for Secondary School Principals.

Eric E. Godin (MEd '08) began his position as Manager of Research Projects at the Council of Independent Colleges, Washington, DC in May, 2008.

Neal Holly (current PhD student) was selected to attend the ASHE Graduate Student Policy Seminar this fall in Jacksonville, FL.

Paul Hopkins is the new Principal at Grafton High School in Yorktown.

Amy Hughes (MEd ’03) joined a Maryland-based consulting company in their division that focuses on K-12, school-based studies.

David P. Jones (PhD ‘02) was named Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at The University of Alabama in August.  He supervises Housing, the Student Union, University Programming, Assessment and Planning Office, and divisional communication.

Jennifer Benson Jones (PhD ‘03) has been named Assistant Professor and Director of Student Services, Executive EdD Program College of Education at the University of Alabama.  

G. Marie Lalor (MEd ’08) accepted an Area Coordinator position at Connecticut College in New London, CT.

Nicole Losavio (MEd ‘08) has started her new position as Director of Student Involvement and Leadership at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, VT.

Tabitha Lundy Strickler: Region I Teacher of the Year.

Bronwyn MacFarlane, an August graduate of The EPPL-Gifted Program, accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Gifted Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. as the new Assistant Professor of Gifted Education! Bronwyn has received one of four national awards for doctoral students given by the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). She will receive her award at the annual conference in Tampa, Florida in November.

Joy Martin was named Assistant Principal of Skipwith Elementary School in Henrico County.

Brian Nichols is the new Principal at Hidenwood Elementary School in Newport News.

Todd Perelli is the new Principal at Poquoson Middle School in Poquoson.

Donna Poland, Ph.D. Gifted Administration 2003, accepted the position of Specialist for Governor's Schools and Gifted Education for the Department of Education in January of 2008.

Patricia Popp, 2001, State Coordinator for Homeless Education, is currently serving as Chair of LeTendre Education Fund, an arm of the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. She is also serving as an invited member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Children and Poverty. Popp recently published a report with colleagues Leslie W. Grant and James H.Stronge entitled Effective teaching and at-risk/highly mobile students: What do award-winning teachers do? Additionally, Popp and three colleagues wrote a refereed paper entitled Helping highly mobile, homeless, and impoverished students succeed: What effective teachers do and presented a concurrent session at the National Title I Conference in Nashville, TN.

Stacy A. Richardson (MEd ’02) was recently promoted to the Associate Dean of Admission at the College of William & Mary.

Patricia Moore Shaffer, a current EPPL/K-12 Administration student, joined the staff of the Educational Policy Institute in July 2008 and was promoted to the position of Vice President, Research & Development, in October. Her current research projects include the development of an evaluation framework for the Teaching with Primary Sources teacher professional development program at the Library of Congress.

Marty Smith Sharpe (EdD '92) was named Vice Provost for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Old Dominion University in August 2008.  In this position, she will oversee regional and specialized accreditation activities, University and state strategic planning processes, assist in academic program planning and review, and will coordinate all external accountability efforts for the University.  She also continues to oversee the Institutional Research and Assessment function at the University.

Diane Soboski (MEd ’08) was named Assistant Director of Admissions at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.

Tamra Stambaugh, EPPL-Gifted graduate from 2007, has been appointed Director of a new center for gifted education at Vanderbilt University after serving a one year post doc at CFGE.

Valerie Walton, May 2008, was appointed Instructional Behavior Specialist for Norfolk Public Schools. "In Norfolk, I have initiated a collaborative program called 'Heart to Heart' for school administrators and special education teachers which will be an annual event. In essence, this program involves school administrators coming together to collaborate with special education teachers on current issues in special education, particularly issues that surround students with behavioral challenges." Additionally, Walton was appointed to serve on the 2008-2009 Virginia Alternate Assessment Program Range Finding Committee for the Virginia Department of Education. 

Jobila Williams (MEd, ’07 and current PhD student) was promoted to Associate Director of Academic Advising at The College of William & Mary.

Professional Activities

Ben Boone (current master’s student) will present "Maintaining Historical Legacies through Orientation Programs," with Keira Kant, Director of Student Activities and First Year Programs at Gettysburg College at the National Orientation Directors Association in Boston from October 30-November 3. The presentation examines how both William & Mary and Gettysburg take advantage of their historical settings to enhance their Orientation programs. Further, service activities performed during Orientation will be linked to creating meaningful town and gown experiences for first-year students regardless of campus proximity to a historical site.

Shannon Chance (current PhD student) and Dr. Brenda Williams (EPPL) received initial acceptance of a co-authored paper they submitted to the International Society for Educational Planning. Chance also had a co-authored study accepted for presentation at the 2009 upcoming conference of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA).

Ralph Charlton (current PhD candidate) has been awarded a $5,000 NCAA Research Grant for his dissertation, " Organizational Culture's Impact on the Graduation Rates for Historically Black College & University Athletes." Charlton, who currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Hampton University, has been invited to present his work this November at a meeting of the NCAA Research Committee.

Sue Henshon, Ph.D. '05, recently published Notes from a Writer (with Valija Rose, a doctoral student) with the Center for Gifted Education.  Notes from a Writer provides resources and activities for gifted students and their parents.  Sue teaches full-time at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she is a member of the graduate faculty.

Lisa L. Heuvel (current PhD student) was an associate producer of "Betwixt Folly and Fate," a new role-playing game about 18th-century Williamsburg. It received a 2008 MUSE Award from the American Association of Museums. Heuvel will represent CW next March on a panel entitled "A Stone's Throw Away: Bridging the Miles in Museum Education," at the Virginia Association of Museums annual conference.

Sean M. Heuvel’s (MEd ’04; current PhD student) book, "Christopher Newport University," by Arcadia Publishing is in production and should be published sometime in Spring 2009.  It is the first comprehensive look at the school's nearly 50-year history ever written.

Neal Holly (current PhD student) was selected to attend the ASHE Graduate Student Policy Seminar this fall in Jacksonville, FL.

Arnie Leonard (PhD ’05) will give a poster presentation at the Army Science Conference in Orlando, FL in December.  The presentation is entitled: "Immersive Simulation of Complex Social Environments."  Essentially, he and a colleague are developing a multi-agent computer simulation to provide immersive cross-cultural experience/training.  On October 2nd, a colleague will present a paper, which he and Leonard co-authored, at the International Military Testing Association (IMTA) conference in Amsterdam.  This paper reviews their work in developing the Army's new Self-Development Handbook.  Leonard was the project manager and principle author for the handbook, which can be downloaded for free here: http://usacac.army.mil/CAC2/cal/Resources.asp

Lee-Ann O’Dell (MEd '03) has received a $150,000 grant award from the Franklin/Southampton Charities for year two of implementation of a three-year project focused on improving literacy skills and increasing student achievement in Franklin City Public Schools. For the assessment phase and year one of implementation she received grant awards totaling $152,000.  Ms. O'Dell serves as the project director and as co-principal investigator with Mrs. Beverly Rabil, Associate Director of Instruction for Franklin City Public Schools. Ms. O'Dell is the Coordinator of K-12 Professional Development Programs for the University of Virginia's School of Continuing and Professional Studies through the Hampton Roads Center in Virginia Beach.

Patricia Moore Shaffer, reports “I want to share that the paper submitted by Jan Rozzelle and myself -- Evaluating the Impact of Professional Development on Teachers' Practice – was accepted for presentation at the American Evaluation Association’s 2008 annual conference in Denver. Our paper will be included in a multi-paper session entitled, Frameworks for Evaluation Teacher Professional Development: Implementation, Outcomes, and Impact. I also learned that I was one of ten graduate students selected to receive a $500 student travel award for this conference based on my essay that explored the use of cost-effectiveness analysis in education.” Shaffer and Rozzelle were also presenters at the CREATE conference in Wilmington, NC in October, 2008.

Kianga Thomas, EPPL/Gifted Ed, served as a faculty member in the NASA Pre-Service Teacher Institute (PSTI) at Hampton University during summer 2008. The two-week residential institute is for college students preparing to teach grades 4-8. The program was designed to increase participant's skills in teaching mathematics and science, while integrating technology and design in the curriculum. Attending students were competitively selected from member institutions across the country.

Jobila Williams (MEd ‘07) participated on a panel, "Common Reading: The Underestimated Significance of Practitioner Knowledge in the Scholarship on Student Success" at the National Academic Advising Association in Chicago on October 2.

Marriages

Katherine (Katie) Cox (MEd ’04) and Ryan Christian Reed are exchanging marriage vows in October 2008.  Katie is the Assistant Director Employer Relations and Liaison to the College of Business at University of Central Florida.

Jaime Deafenbaugh Dunn (MEd ’03) wed Robb Dunn in August 2007. Jaime now works as the program assistant in the Washington Office of the College of William & Mary.

Adam Lalor (MEd student) and G. Marie Bartram (MEd ‘08) wed on June 7, 2008.  Adam is the executive director of One in Four and Marie began her new position at Connecticut College in August.

 Katie (Poe) Smith (MEd ‘08) wed Van Smith on August 30th, 2008. She also started a new job in early September in career development with the Department of Labor in Richmond.

Jennifer Waina (M.Ed. '08) and Douglas Dahnke (MBA '07) were married in the Wren Chapel on Sunday, October 19th.   Jen continues to work for the Undergraduate Business Program at William & Mary. 

Birth Announcements

John and Susan Foubert celebrated the birth of their first child, Margaret Sarah, on January 27, 2008.

Laurie Mackey (current master’s student) and her husband, Nate, celebrated the birth of Elise Jane Mackey on May 4, 2008.

Melissa K. Palacios (current master’s student) and her husband, Ricardo Alfonso Palacios, celebrated the birth of their first child, Gabriel Alfonso, on October 11, 2008.
