W&M Teachers in Residence

Are you looking for support to fund your graduate degree?  The William & Mary Teacher in Residence (TIR) program offers a paid pathway to teacher licensure and a master’s degree — all in as little as 12 months.

Program Benefits

  • $20,000 paid internship with a partnering school division
  • $9,000 tuition award
  • Full-year classroom placement with extensive, hands-on experience
  • Mentorship from a highly trained, experienced classroom teacher
  • Cohort model that builds community, collaboration, and ongoing support
  • Guaranteed employment with the partnering division after graduation

If you are committed to making a positive impact on students’ lives, the TIR program provides an exceptional opportunity to launch your teaching career with both financial and professional support.

Program Overview

TIR residents pursue a graduate degree in one of the following areas:

  • Elementary Education
  • Secondary Education
  • ESL/Bilingual Education
  • Special Education

Students work as interns throughout the academic year in a public school in New Kent County Public Schools or Newport News Public Schools. This yearlong internship also fulfills the student-teaching requirement for your degree.

Upon graduation, residents commit to teaching in their assigned district for three years. Because of this work requirement, the program is not open to international students.

Apply now for one of the teacher education programs listed above.

Licensure Requirements

Students who successfully complete degree coursework (in either Elementary Education, Secondary Education, ESL/Bilingual Education, or Special Education) will be eligible to apply for licensure as a teacher in the state of Virginia. Therefore, programs are designed for students who are not already licensed as educators in Virginia. Learn more about applying for licensure.

Testing Requirements

All teacher candidates must obtain passing scores on the professional teacher assessments prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education. At William & Mary, all required licensure tests are also graduation requirements; therefore, the appropriate tests must be completed regardless of a teacher candidate’s decision to apply for a teaching license. Learn more about testing requirements.
