W&M Teachers in Residence
The W&M Teachers in Residence (TIR) program, a partnership between William & Mary and New Kent County Public Schools and Newport News Public Schools, provides graduate students in Curriculum & Instruction seeking initial teacher licensure with an opportunity to complete student teaching requirements as a paid internship throughout their program. W&M Teachers in Residence become employees of the school district, and work full-time throughout the academic year with a teacher coach. Halfway through the year, TIRs take over instruction in the classroom. W&M Teachers in Residence work in their classroom during the day, and complete their William & Mary course work in the afternoons and evenings. TIRs are paid over $20,000 for their year in the classroom, and receive an additional $9,000 stipend toward tuition. TIRs agree to teach in the district for the first three years following graduation.

Requirements
Graduate students in the W&M Teachers in Residence program complete degree coursework in one of the following areas: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, ESL/Bilingual Education, or Special Education. Students work full-time throughout the academic year in a paid internship at a public school in either New Kent County or Newport News City to complete the student teaching requirement of the degree. Upon graduation, students teach in the district for three years.
Field Experience
Clinical experiences are a complement to and an integral component of the teacher preparation program in the School of Education. These experiences serve as a bridge between the knowledge, skills, and dispositions developed through formal course work and the practical application of those professional attributes as a classroom teacher. The W&M Teachers in Residence program provides a unique opportunity for students to work full-time throughout the academic year in a classroom with a teacher coach.
Licensure Requirements
Students who successfully complete degree coursework (in either Elementary Education, Secondary Education, ESL/Bilingual Education, or Special Education) will be eligible to apply for licensure as a teacher in the state of Virginia. Therefore, programs are designed for students who are not already licensed as educators in Virginia. Learn more about applying for licensure.
Testing Requirements
All teacher candidates must obtain passing scores on the professional teacher assessments prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education. At William & Mary, all required licensure tests are also graduation requirements; therefore, the appropriate tests must be completed regardless of a teacher candidate’s decision to apply for a teaching license.
