Philippa Chin M.Ed. ’19, Ph.D. ’23 joins W&M faculty

Philippa ChinThis fall, the School of Education welcomes new faculty members. Today, we introduce Assistant Professor in Counselor Education Philippa Chin M.Ed. ’19, Ph.D. ’23 who is joining our Counseling faculty.

Tell us a little about your background and what brought you to W&M.

As a proud William & Mary (W&M) alumna of the M.Ed. and Ph.D. programs in Counselor Education, the School of Education has always been a place where I felt welcomed, supported and part of something larger than myself. Returning as faculty, I look forward to contributing to the W&M’s vibrant presence in Williamsburg. Being back allows me to weave together my academic work, my family life and the community we call home.

What’s your area of research and what question are you most passionate about answering right now?

My scholarship focuses on bringing critical discourse into counselor education as both a training tool and a means of challenging oppressive structures while supporting healing centered practice. I also aim to advance research on perimenopausal mental health outcomes to strengthen culturally responsive care for women in midlife.

What else are you hoping to get involved with on campus or in the community?

I look forward to collaborating across departments on research centered on women’s health and well‑being, and to strengthening our partnership with Williamsburg‑James City County Schools to support youth in understanding female physiological development across the lifespan.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I recognize that many students “don’t know what they don’t know.” I was there once. Therefore, I value collaboration, mentorship and creating spaces where students feel supported, seen and empowered in their work.
