Journal publications by EPPL Higher Education doctoral students
Carla Costello and Sharon Stone, doctoral students in the EPPL Higher Education program, recently have had publication of their journal articles. Ms. Costello's article, "Women in the Academy: The Impact of Culture, Climate and Policies on Female Classified Staff" was published in the latest edition of the NASPA Journal about Women in Higher Education. Ms. Costello's findings reveal that women classified staff experience both gender and classification barriers to professional advancement. Carla added, "Organizations can do much to lessen the impact of gendered organizations. However, it is equally important that women take responsibility for their futures. There are many ways to ensure success. One way is to gain empowerment through education by learning as much as possible about one's current job and researching jobs of interest."
Ms. Costello has another new publication from her collaboration with Ms. Stone on the article, "Positive Psychology and Self-Efficacy: Potential Benefits for College Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Learning Disabilities," published in the summer 2012 Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability. In their article, Ms. Costello and Ms. Stone draw upon positive psychology and self-efficacy theory to examine current support strategies that higher education professionals can use to facilitate college students with learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Sharon reflected, "Using positive psychology to improve students' self-efficacy in academics takes the focus away from impairments and instead strengthens what is sound." Both Costello and Stone have presented their research at national conferences and are working on furthering this line of inquiry through additional study.
