TIPPS for Students
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Leandra Parris
Using an equity-centered, trauma-informed framework, this project will focus on developing and revising a Tier 2 curriculum for students experiencing traumatic stress associated with relational injustice. Specifically, we will be adapting the current curriculum for students holding marginalized identities (students with intellectual disabilities, racially/ethnically marginalized youth, LGBTQI2S+ youth). Implementation of the curriculum with middle school youth, along with teacher training using the partner modules, will occur in late Fall and Spring.
Aprendiendo y Creciendo Juntos
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Katherine Barko-Alva
In mutual collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Bickham-Mendez (Sociology, William & Mary) and local immigrant families within our community, we are designing a community-based research project to meet the linguistic, academic, sociocultural, and cognitive needs of multilingual learners and their families. The purpose of this project is to highlight our communities' resources and increase our networks of support.
Social-Emotional Learning for All
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Janise Parker
Using a culturally responsible dual-factor of mental health framework, this project will examine outcomes associated with a social-emotional learning program that was designed to help marginalized youth thrive. Specifically, we will interview key stakeholders about their experiences with implementing the program to understand how community-based mentoring can address marginalized youths’ limited access to social-emotional learning and structured support for fostering adolescent well-being.
