Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a critical component of the minor in educational studies, giving students the opportunity to get out in the field and practice . Whether you choose the global education or policy and equity concentration, you'll complete 40 hours of approved off-campus experiential work on an education topic. Many students choose to complete their hours through a tutoring or mentoring organization, or by pursuing an independent research topic.
The Office of Community Engagement offers a wide range of programs including Branch Out Alternative Breaks, in which a group of students work in partnership with a host organization on a community-driven goal, as well as Lafayette Kids and Griffin School Partnerships, which provide youth development opportunities for young people in the Williamsburg area. You'll work with your faculty advisor to identify the best opportunities for you to explore your interests, put your ideas into practice, and gain meaningful experiences outside the classroom.
The Faison Center
The Faison Center, located in Richmond, is an organization whose mission is to give children and adults with autism and related challenges the best opportunity to live rich and fulfilling lives. As a preferred partner for William & Mary students seeking field experiences, The Faison Center offers myriad opportunities to serve and learn. Their services span from early intervention to adult care and include school-based programs, a behavioral health clinic and adult services. We encourage students to learn about the many ways they can connect with The Faison Center.
