Full Description
Robert D. and Patricia Lee Pavey Family Co-Chair in Instructional Technology and Professor of Science Education Meredith Kier recently published a new article in “Teaching and Teacher Education,” titled “Examining Science and Mathematics Teacher Candidates’ Evolving Perceptions and Identities Through a STEM Early Field Experience with Marginalized Youth.”
The study shows how early, well-supported field experiences can help future educators grow into inclusive, student-centered STEM teachers. Fifteen future science and mathematics teachers joined a free summer STEM program with students in grades three-10. Through daily teaching and guided reflection, they learned to adapt lessons in real time, build authentic relationships and recognize how systemic inequities shape classrooms.
