Full Description

In November, seven Elementary Education master's students presented their research to Virginia science educators at the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) 2024 Professional Development Institute in Williamsburg, Va. The group included: Emily Collins M.A.Ed. '25; Josie Dudley '24, M.A.Ed. '25; Lillemor Eng M.A.Ed. '25; Evelyn Poole '24, M.A.Ed. '25; Brynne Rockovits M.A.Ed. '25; Paulina Roselle M.A.Ed. '25; and, Grace Williams M.A.Ed. '25.

During the session, called "Going Deeper Into School Yards: Possibilities for K-8 Science," prospective teachers in Assistant Professor of Education Kathryn Lanouette's Elementary Science course shared their learning processes about their own schoolyards. They discussed how they engaged with the ethical, ecological and political dimensions of where they teach through map making, and how this informed their teaching of K-5 science SOLS. Students also attended the conference, meeting other Virginia graduate students and participating in other sessions of interest.

The generous support of private donors made this student presentation possible. The Future Teachers Fund, created to provide support for students in the School of Education's Curriculum & Instruction program, covered the cost of attendance for each student presenter.
