Summary

Robert D. and Patricia Lee Pavey Family Co-Chair in Instructional Technology, Associate Professor of Education and Chair of Curriculum & Instruction Lindy Johnson has recently co-authored “It’s time for teachers and professors to shift from the education blame game.”

Full Description

Associate Professor Lindy Johnson co-authored the article with Peter Smagorinsky, professor emeritus in the department of Language & Literacy Education at the University of Georgia. Titled “It’s time for teachers and professors to shift from the education blame game,” the article discusses how the field of education has changed over the years and how these changes impact educators and students. She shared her opinion on how it is imperative to begin shifting from blaming teachers for the struggles of students in higher learning and start understanding how teaching has become more and more challenging.

“Professors often blame high school teachers, who blame middle school teachers, who blame elementary teachers, who blame parents for lack of school readiness. And professors get blamed in the workforce when college graduates don’t measure up in some regard, while education professors get blamed when teachers don’t raise students’ test scores so that everyone is above average.”
