Summer Institute
The Eastern Virginia Writing Project Summer Institute is a professional development opportunity to train teachers on the sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners. Teachers will learn how to teach writing in their classrooms, in every K-12 subject area.
The Summer Institute operates under two beliefs:
- Teachers who help other teachers produce students who become better writers
- Effective teachers of writing need to be writers themselves. The EVWP promotes teacher craft, power, and professionalism.
Upon completion of the summer institute, TCs become Fellows in a community of writers — and become teachers who are confident, determined, and energized for the new school year.
Summer Institute 2023
This year's Summer Institute will take place on July 1 - August 10, 2023 (online).
The application deadline is June 15.
The summer invitational and follow-up meetings are free, but participation is by application only. Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet attended the Summer Institute.
The annual Eastern Virginia Writing Project Summer Institute is a fully online learning experience that takes place over the course of 6 weeks during the summer. Participants will engage in online synchronous meetings on Mondays from 3-4 pm. The rest of the work can be done asynchronously. There will also be two in-person/face-to-face follow-up meetings that will take place during the fall semester.
After participants apply and are selected for the Summer Institute, they will be invited to join our dedicated online learning platform. Participants will engage in writing exercises and different forms of storytelling. Participants write daily, working toward published pieces of their own, and design teaching and learning inquiries to use with their students in the classroom.
