From Microbes to Meals: Life Science Lab Camp

Grade level: Rising 7th-9th
Location: William & Mary
Dates: July 1st - 3rd
Time: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Cost: $269
Course Length: 3 Days

Course Description:

A high-energy, three-day science camp where students explore disease-causing microbes, fascinating animals, and the chemistry behind food through labs, challenges, and interactive investigations.

Day 1: Medical Microbiology

Medical Microbiology introduces students to the microscopic organisms that impact human health and disease. Students will explore bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites while learning how infections spread, how the immune system responds, and how medicine works to prevent and treat disease. Through hands-on investigations, simulations, case-based problem solving, and interactive review games, students will think like clinicians and public-health scientists as they analyze symptoms, identify pathogens, and design prevention strategies. This course emphasizes scientific reasoning, real-world medical applications, and responsible health practices.

Day 2:  Zoology

Zoology is an in-depth exploration of the animal kingdom, focusing on how structure and function support survival in diverse environments. Students will investigate animal classification, adaptations, behavior, and ecological relationships through hands-on labs, comparative anatomy activities, and collaborative challenges. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based reasoning as students analyze how animals interact with their environments and with one another. This course also introduces conservation biology and ethical considerations related to wildlife and human impact on ecosystems.

Day 3: The Chemistry of Food

The Chemistry of Food explores the molecular science behind what we eat. Students will examine macromolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats; investigate chemical reactions involved in cooking and digestion; and analyze how pH, enzymes, and energy transformations affect food quality and nutrition. Through hands-on experiments, data analysis, and problem-solving activities, students will connect chemistry concepts to everyday life, health, and performance. This course emphasizes critical thinking, real-world applications, and scientific literacy related to nutrition and food choices.
