Success of Students
Virtual Tutoring Program
Success of Students (SOS) is a partnership between the W&M School of Education and church communities designed to serve K-12 students through academic, social and emotional support.
Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide virtual support for elementary and secondary students learning at home, SOS pairs graduate students at William & Mary with local K-12 students for mentoring and tutoring. Mentors provide academic support, as well as skills that go beyond the classroom, including developing self-esteem, managing stress, setting goals and regulating emotions. Mentors receive training and experience in working with families and youth from diverse backgrounds, as well as in providing culturally responsive support.
SOS provides resources and development opportunities for partner communities, including group and parent sessions and workshops.
Research conducted through the program is exploring the potential of partnerships between mental health practitioners and the community to empower people and increase access to services, as well as how these collaborations can better support the growth of Black students.
