What kind of educational and professional experiences did you have prior to beginning this degree?
Before coming to William & Mary, I earned a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Southern California and a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University. I also had a brief experience working in marketing, which allowed me to develop valuable skills in communication, data analysis and strategic thinking. These diverse experiences gave me a broad interdisciplinary foundation and helped shape my analytical approach to policy and education research.
As a student pursuing a doctorate in Curriculum and Learning Design, why did you choose this field, and what motivates you in this work?
My academic and professional focus was initially on international policy and nonprofit organizations. However, a pivotal internship experience made me realize education's profound impact on individuals and society. During that time, I witnessed firsthand how education policy shapes student opportunities, access and long-term outcomes. This realization sparked my passion for higher education policy and equity, driving me to explore how institutions can better support diverse student populations.
What do you hope to be doing after graduation? In 10 or 15 years?
My career goal after graduation is to work either as a faculty member in higher education or as a researcher in a policy organization. While securing a faculty position can be highly competitive, I am committed to pursuing research in higher education policy, particularly in areas that promote educational equity and inclusion.
Why did you choose William & Mary and specifically your degree program? What sets this degree program apart from those offered at other colleges?
William & Mary is a prestigious institution with a deep historical connection to higher education, making it an ideal place to study higher education policy. One of the aspects that sets this program apart is the strong mentorship and close collaboration between students and faculty. Unlike more hierarchical structures, faculty here act as guides and colleagues, fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. Additionally, Williamsburg provides a peaceful and safe setting for focused study and research while being close to Washington, D.C., and offering more professional development opportunities.
What has been the most influential experience you've had so far in your program?
For me, the most influential experience has been the incredible support and mentorship from my professors. Before coming here, I was unclear about my next steps or long-term career path. However, through coursework and guidance from my GA supervisor and advisor, I have explored new research areas, developed professional skills, and gained valuable insights into the academic field. One inspiring milestone has been the opportunity to present at a conference alongside my supervisor, giving me firsthand experience in academic networking and professional skills.
