Counseling Licensure
Counseling licensure varies by state. Please read this page carefully. Forms on this page are for students seeking licensure in Virginia only.
If you are seeking licensure in a state other than Virginia, obtain the required forms from your appropriate state licensing board or follow the instructions on the board’s website if using a portal.
The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) provides a directory with links to state boards for those seeing licensure as clinical mental health counselors. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) provides a directory with links to state boards for those seeking licensure/certification as school counselors:

Transcript Requests
In order to submit your application to your State Board of Examiners (CMHC) or Department of Education (SC), an official William & Mary transcript will be required. YOU will need to order the official transcript and have it sent directly to the State Board of Examiners (CMHC) or Department of Education (SC).
Complete instructions for ordering your official W&M transcript can be found on the University Registrar's website.
- When ordering your transcript, ensure that you select the option for your transcript to be processed after your degree is awarded.
- If you have not yet completed your degree, be sure to select the option to “HOLD processing until degree is posted” as your option of when to proceed/send.
- If you completed both undergraduate and graduate programs at W&M, both degrees will be shown on your transcript.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling – Virginia Licensure
All candidates applying for the License Professional Counselor (LPC) credential in Virginia should review the LPC Licensure Process Handbook available on the Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Counseling website. If you are applying for licensure as an LPC in Virginia, please use the forms below.

School Counseling – Virginia Licensure
All candidates for School Counseling licensure will apply for their Virginia license through Virginia Licensure Online (VALO). If you are applying for School Counseling licensure in Virginia, please use the forms below.

(complete Part I only)
College Verification Forms cannot be completed until your degree confers. This is generally the Monday following graduation. To request a completed College Verification Form, complete Part I and email your form and the certificates of completion for your statutory trainings to jhchamberlain@wm.edu.
