Summary

Mitic is the 2024 recipient of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations/American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship for Research on the Liberal Arts.

Full Description

This project, “Examining the Impact of Public Liberal Arts Education on Cultivating Civic and Democratic Citizenship” is a collaborative study with Dr. Leping Mou of the University of Glasgow. The aim of this grant is to examine associations between liberal arts education elements (multidisciplinary curriculum, active pedagogy, mentorship, and residential learning) and the development of qualities of engaged citizens (openness to diversity and challenge, pluralistic orientation, generative behavior, civic and democratic behavior). This mixed methods study utilizes the College and Beyond II (CBII) longitudinal dataset to link undergraduate experiences with post-college outcomes. The findings of this study will inform public debate about the value of a liberal arts education in the 21st century. Findings have been presented at the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers annual conference in Luxembourg in September 2024.
