Full Description
We are excited to share that The Fred Huby Memorial Professor of Education Jamel K. Donnor, faculty affiliate in the College of Arts & Sciences and William & Mary Law School, has co-authored “Name, Image, and Likeness in College Sports: Power and Policy in the New Era of Athletics.” Scheduled for publication by Harvard Education Press in May 2027, the book explores how NIL monetization has changed the relationship between student-athletes and their institutions.
Donnor joins co-authors Shaun R. Harper, Isaiah Simmons and Nate Jones to examine the legal history of NIL and the landmark cases and policies that have shaped its development. Drawing on interviews with 40 Division I athletes across eight sports from Power Four conferences, conducted a year into the initial NIL change, the authors connect legal and policy analysis with athletes’ experiences.
The book shares light on the equity threats the new NIL policies pose for women, racially diverse student-athlete populations, and athletes at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and community colleges. It also offers practical strategies for professionals who recruit, support and advise student-athletes, along with a vision for future NIL policy and the changes athletics departments should prepare for.
Written for coaches, athletics administrators, NIL coordinators, student-athlete academic support professionals, journalists and policymakers, the book provides guidance for understanding the challenges and opportunities of NIL in higher education.
