Associate Professor of ESL/Bilingual Education Katherine Barko-Alva selected by STLI for a 2026 Thank-a-Teacher recognition award

Associate Professor Katherine Barko-Alva has been recognized by the Studio for Teaching and Learning Innovation (STLI) for supporting outstanding teaching at William & Mary and demonstrating investment in her students.

Full Description

Each year, the STLI Thank-a-Teacher program selects three faculty members who have been recognized by students in one of three areas: Developing Reflective Practice, Prioritizing Learner Engagement, and Promoting Belonging in Learning Environments. Barko-Alva was recognized with a Developing Reflective Practice award. 

In the letter notifying her of her award, STLI Executive Director Adam Barger shared a few of the Thank-a-Teacher notes they received from Barko-Alva’s students:

“ You have guided me to make choices that have helped me continue learning and growing professionally.”

“You have consistently demonstrated kindness and support in every interaction and decision you've made, whether it's with students, colleagues, or the community.”

The awards were presented at the annual Teaching & Learning Symposium on May 7th, 2026.
