Clinical Assistant Professors in Counselor Education Brent Henderson and Olivia Uwamahoro facilitated the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) Training workshop, developed by LivingWorks, for William & Mary School of Education (SOE) faculty and students. This training took place at the SOE building over the course of two days, March 27-28. ASIST is an internationally recognized, evidenced-based, two-day workshop that teaches people how to provide suicide first aid. The workshop is led by certified trainers.
During the workshop, participants learned how to recognize individuals who are at risk of suicide and how to help keep them safe in the short term in order to seek out long-term assistance. The workshop consisted of discussions, modeling and role playing various scenarios to help all participants feel more prepared to provide support for others. Suicide can touch anyone at any time. ASIST empowers people to provide lifesaving help in extraordinary moments.
