Philippa Chin

Profile

Dr. Philippa Chin is a licensed professional counselor (LPC), a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and a national certified counselor (NCC). Dr. Chin previously served William & Mary’s School of Education as the Director of the Project Empower Mentorship Program and Doctoral Co-Director for the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic. Dr. Chin is a therapist at a rural practice offering outpatient drug rehabilitation, trauma care and co-parenting, couples and family therapy. Dr. Chin primarily utilizes emotion focused therapy (EFT), trauma focused cognitive therapy (TFCBT), structural strategies and systemic therapy, while prioritizing the integration of clinical cross cultural and multicultural skills.

Dr. Chin’s research examines how individuals and communities navigate identity, health and sociocultural power structures across the lifespan. Her research examines how ethnic and racial identity (ERI) formation influences educational goals and relational dynamics particularly for multiracial, cross cultural and marginalized populations. She also investigates perimenopausal health, highlighting biopsychosocial and cultural factors that shape women’s midlife experiences. Furthermore, Dr. Chin explores critical discourse frameworks within clinical training environments and counselor education to advance liberatory processes.

Dr. Chin is the President of the Virginia Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (VAMCD), an editorial board member of the Family Journal, a mentor with the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Leadership Academy, and a member of the ACES Continuing Education Committee. Dr. Chin has presented at state, regional, national and international conferences (Europe, the Caribbean and Canada) and published in scholarly journals.
