ASTP: Alcohol Skills Training Program

The basis of the Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) is helping college students reduce the risks associated with drinking alcohol.  Counselors use cognitive-behavioral self-management strategies and motivational interviewing techniques to help facilitate discussion regarding harm reduction.  ASTP consists of one hour and a half group session with up to eight students participating.  The groups are held in one of the larger group rooms in the New Leaf Clinic in the School of Education.  Students with minor alcohol sanctions are typically assigned to an ASTP group.  One or two clinic interns lead the ASTP groups.  This is typically the sanction issued for first-time alcohol and other drug offenders referred from the Dean of Students Office.
