About

Vanessa earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology at George Mason University in 2021. Her interest in counseling was sparked during the COVID-19 pandemic when she supported children and their families in navigating the transition to virtual learning and by addressing emotional, social, and anxiety-related challenges during a time of uncertainty. She strongly believes in the philosophy that "health is wealth" and tries to regularly incorporate mindfulness techniques into both her professional and personal life. What motivates her to serve as a student ambassador is the opportunity to connect with fellow students who may find it challenging to build relationships due to the many commitments that students juggle. She wants to contribute meaningfully to her program (Online M.Ed. in Counseling – School Counseling), whether in big ways or small, by fostering a sense of community, support, and belonging. She aims to embody and promote the flexibility and inclusivity that defines the counseling program and highlight how even the smallest efforts can lead to a meaningful, lasting impact.

What's your favorite course (so far)?

My favorite course so far was definitely Techniques of Counseling. I learned so many valuable strategies that have empowered me to make a positive impact on the students I serve. I have also been able to apply the skills I learned to provide meaningful feedback to my peers.

What's your favorite thing about William & Mary?

My favorite thing about William and Mary is the sense of community. Even as an online student who can not be on campus as often, when I do visit Williamsburg, I feel connected through the interactions I have with fellow students and the faculty.

What's a fun fact about you?

I spent the beginning of my career working with children in an after-school setting. I love connecting with kids through games, art, music, and current trends to create a space where children feel comfortable being themselves and expressing their interests.
