Describe your career and how the William & Mary School of Education helped prepare you.
I am a school counselor at Shaker Heights Middle School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The training and preparation at William & Mary greatly prepared me for the NCE, OAE (Ohio Assessment for Educators), and the job search process. The knowledge I gained allowed me to quickly build expertise, and has already allowed me opportunities for leadership and guidance.
Why did you choose to apply to William & Mary and specifically to your program?
I chose William & Mary for the combination of rigor, experience & expertise in the field and the price. W&M easily beat out the local school counseling Master's programs in my area, and remained relatively comparable in price.
What has been the most influential experience as an alum?
Two experiences come to mind. First, thanks to the coursework I did at William & Mary, I've been selected to help write our first District-level Comprehensive School Counseling Plan. Second, I think spreading the William & Mary name has been pretty influential! While known by name, very few here in Ohio know W&M by experience, and so sharing my journey with students has been invaluable.
Any additional information you think a prospective student should know about the School of Education and our degree programs?
Your education will serve as the foundation for the rest of your career. Advocate for what you need to be the best "you" possible, because ultimately, that's what your students deserve.
