What kind of educational and professional experiences did you have prior to beginning this degree?
I have over 10 years of professional experience working in academic advising. I started as a program advisor and worked in several advising positions before becoming the director of an advising center. I have also been an adjunct instructor and taught classes in public speaking.
As a student pursuing a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, why did you choose this field, and what motivates you in this work?
Like most people who work in higher education, I stumbled upon it by accident. I originally went to college for a degree in journalism. However, some of the co-curricular experiences I had as an undergraduate made me interested in a career in higher education. The rest, as they say, is history. I enjoy the ability to resolve students' and even some colleagues' problems and challenges with ensuring student success. I find the problem-solving process to be a rewarding experience.
What do you hope to be doing after graduation? In 10 or 15 years?
I hope to be in a position where I can be an effective change agent and someone that students will remember and appreciate the work I have done for them. I feel that I have already accomplished this to some extent, but the work is never finished.
Why did you choose to apply to William & Mary and specifically to this program? What sets this degree program apart from those offered at other colleges?
I chose the Executive Ed.D. program at William & Mary because it delivered on its promise of catering to working professionals. I have been able to pursue a doctoral program that does not completely consume my life and allows me to be able to continue working and have a life outside of the classroom. The experience of having online and on-campus courses has been great and the faculty and staff have been extremely supportive and welcoming from the moment I expressed interest. It's not just the William & Mary brand that sets this degree apart from other institutions, it's the people who are committed to your success and want to see you become a better practitioner in the field.
What has been the most influential experience you've had so far in your program?
Having a cohort in an executive part-time program has been one of the most supportive parts of the program for me both personally and professionally. I have found that my network grows extensively to better the work I do both in and out of my context. I have a great group of colleagues who work in various fields of education that I will continue to work with well after my program is finished.
