On Writing:

Writing is like a journey of self-discovery with all the hopes, fears, laughter, and tears that journey entails. You may write from the heart or from the head, for yourself or for others, but write you must to discover your self and the world beyond you.

"That which is impossible and probable is better than that which is possible and improbable" -Aristotle

Education:

BA English MA Education, The College of William and Mary

Position:

Assistant Professor, Thomas Nelson Community Collge

On Writing:

Writing is a lonely work that has led me to a community of colleagues. It is the best form of time-travel that keeps me grounded in the present. Like Aristotle's quote, it is a paradox: exhausting and exhilarating, exciting and enervating, it is something I cannot not do because it helps me make sense of all that is incomprehensible.

"And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make" -Lennon and McCartney

Education:

Position:

Associate Professor and Chair, Art Department, Thomas Nelson Community College

On Writing:

I write to get things out of my brain. There is a natural impulse to record daily life. The mundane moments become extraordinary through the act of isolating them on paper, traces of life lived.

"Don't ask what the world needs; ask instead what makes you come alive. Because what the world needs is people who've come alive" -Howard Thurman

Education:

BA English UNC Chapel Hill; MA English Va Tech; MFA Creative Writing Warren Wilson College

Position:

Creative Writing Professor, William and Mary

On Writing:

A writer learns through diligence by obvserving what the best writers do - every nuance, down to the use of a good comma - and then trying it out. The older I get, though, the less picky I am about little things like commas (to be contradictory here), and the more interested I am in how a writer makes what's on the page ring true.

On    Writing:

Writing is exploration...and making sense of things. Writing is a struggle, but a wonderful struggle that allows you to think more about something and figure out a better way to say what you want to say.
